Diane Tucker, PhD

Dr. Diane Tucker is Professor and Director of UAB Science and Technology Honors  Program. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology and has served on faculty for 36 years. Dr. Tucker is a member of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and is one of the founding members of UAB Palliative Care. She has served as a psychologist with the Supportive Care and Survivorship Clinic since 2006 and has published in psycho‐oncology, breast cancer, and decision making at the end of life.

Sylvia Huang, PhD, MA, MEd

Dr. Huang is Assistant Professor in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care at UAB.  She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology at University of Alabama and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Palliative Psychology and Psycho-oncology at UAB. Dr. Huang serves as Director of Psychology and Counseling Program at UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care and founded the Psycho-Oncology Counseling Residency Program (PCRP). As a licensed clinical psychologist, she provides counseling to patients and families facing serious illness and spearheads the UAB Psycho-Oncology Distress Screening and Management Program.  Her interests include the implementation of system-wide best practices to improve access and quality of psychosocial cancer care, interprofessional education (IPE), health disparities, mixed-method research and trauma-informed palliative care.

Judith Igbinakenzua, DNP, A-GNP-C

Judith Igbinakenzua is a Clinical Care Coordinator at the Supportive Care Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital. Ms. Igbinakenzua earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2019 and completed her Doctoral of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program at UAB School of Nursing in 2022. She is a board certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Igbinakenzua is currently pursuing a post-Master’s degree in Psychiatry Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at the UAB School of Nursing. She serves as the Nurse Coordinator and Nurse Educator for the Psycho-Oncology Counseling Program at UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care. Her DNP project was focused on implementing the depression screening and management program for women with gynecological cancer. Her passion is to improve access to psycho-social care and psycho-pharmacological management for patients with cancer and serious illness.

Lindsey Murphy, LICSW, PIP, OSW-C

Lindsey Murphy currently serves as the supervisor for UAB Oncology Social Work Services. Lindsey graduated from Auburn University in 2010 with a B.S. in Psychology. Lindsey went on to complete a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama in 2012. Lindsey is licensed as an independent clinical social worker and also holds a certification in oncology social work. Lindsey has extensive social work experiences across care settings including hospice, inpatient case management, outpatient oncology social services, counseling, as well as leading support groups and peer mentor programs Lindsey has experience in helping patients cope with or adjust to illness, guiding patients and their families through healthcare obstacles and helping them obtain resources when necessary. Lindsey’s areas of interest are adjustment to illness, survivorship, end of life, and grief/bereavement.

Richard Taylor, PhD, DNP, CRNP, ANP-BC

Dr. Taylor Is an Assistant Professor in the UAB School of Nursing. He graduated from UAB School of Nursing in 1985 with a Bachelor’s degree, received his Master’s degree in Adult Oncology Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1987, a postgraduate Adult Nurse Practitioner degree in 2000, a Doctor of Nursing Practice from UAB in 2010, and a PhD in nursing from UAB in 2022.

He was the Lead Nurse Practitioner in the Adult Neuro-Oncology program at UAB for 14 years and the Director of Nursing for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center’s CMS Innovation Award (lay navigation for older cancer survivors) before joining the graduate faculty at the UAB SON eight years ago. He has a part-time faculty practice in the UAB Supportive Care and Survivorship Clinic at The UAB Kirklin Clinic. His clinical experience includes oncology and palliative care. His research experience and interests involve cancer survivorship, palliative care, and quality of life in older adults. His dissertation topic was life-space mobility in the older adult, community-dwelling cancer survivor in the Deep South: A secondary data analysis. 

 

Kay Knowlton, PhD, LPC-S, NCCACS, CCMHC

Dr. Kay Knowlton is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Alabama and by the National Board for Certified Counselors. She is a Certified Mental Health Counselor and has been in private practice since 1980. She earned her Master’s in Counseling at UAB and her PhD at the University of Alabama and she was certified as a Sex Therapist by the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She has provided counseling to patients and families and staff in UAB Palliative and Supportive Care since 2006. She is a clinical supervisor for the Palliative Care Psychology and Counseling Program and for the Psycho-Oncology Counseling Residency Program (PCRP). 

 

Moneka Thompson, MDiv, MA, NCC

Rev. Moneka Thompson is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She received her Master of Divinity from Hood Theological Seminary and her Master of Counseling degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She currently serves as the Spiritual Care Manager at the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care, where she primarily provides counseling, chaplaincy support and program management.

Dr. Rocque is Associate professor in the Divisions of Hematology & Oncology and Gerontology, Geriatrics, & Palliative Care at UAB. She completed her undergraduate degree, medical, doctorate, Internal Medicine residency, and fellowship in Hematology & Oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also completed a Master of Science in Public Health from UAB. She currently practices as a medical oncologist, specializing in the care of women with breast cancer.

Kimberly Keene, MD

Dr. Kimberly Keene, MD is Professor at UAB Department of Radiation Oncology. Her current interests include stereotactic body radiotherapy and IMRT, particularly for GI malignancies. Her other primary treatment sites include pediatric solid malignancies, breast, and head and neck cancers. In the field of Breast cancer, Dr. Keene specializes in prevention of local regional recurrence, molecular predictors of local regional recurrence, clinical outcomes and toxicity. She is interested in looking at goals of the choosing wisely campaign for breast cancer treatment in the Medicare population through collaboration. Dr. Keene’s R21 grant investigated the molecular predictors of local regional recurrence.

Helen Krontiras, MD

Dr. Krontiras, a breast surgical oncologist, is the Medical Director of the UAB Cancer Service Line and Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic. She is the Co-Director of the Lynne Cohen Preventive Care Program for Women’s Cancers at UAB and the Co-Director of the Breast Cancer Prevention and Risk Assessment Clinic. In her role as Assistant Chief Medical Officer for Ambulatory Quality and Patient Safety for UAB Medicine, she participates in quality improvement and quality assurance activities related to delivery of high quality and cost- effective care, including analysis and regular review of ambulatory quality outcomes, and data and development of improvements in clinical and operational processes.

Hennessy Williams, MD

Dr. Hennessy Williams, MD, is an Internal Medicine specialist in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended and graduated from University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2009, having over 12 years of diverse experience, especially in Internal Medicine.

Claire Rummage, PharmD, BCOP

Claire Rummage is a Pharmacist at UAB hospital who specializes in hematology oncology clinical pharmacy. She serves as a preceptor of the ASHP-accredited (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) residency in pharmacy practice at UAB. Prior to joining UAB, Dr. Rummage had served as Hematology – Oncology Clinical Pharmacist at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa as well as pharmacist at Viva Health based in Birmingham, Alabama.

 

Margaret Liang, MD

Dr. Liang is an Assistant Professor of UAB Division of Gynecology Oncology. She grew up in Ohio and completed her medical school and residency training at The Ohio State University and her fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Wendy Landier, PhD, CRNP, CPON, PNP-BC, FAAN

Dr. Wendy Landier is a Professor in the Divisions of Hematology and Oncology at UAB and Deputy Director of Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship. Her research focuses on understanding and improving health outcomes in cancer survivors, with an emphasis on long- term follow-up of cancer survivors; guideline development for cancer survivorship care; secondary cancer prevention; ototoxicity in childhood cancer survivors; adherence to therapy; improving acquisition of health knowledge, and understanding the effective delivery of patient/family education.

 

Smita Bhatia, MD, MPH

Dr. Smita Bhatia is the Gay and Bew White Endowed Professor in Pediatric Oncology and serves as Vice Chair for Outcomes in the Department of Pediatrics at UAB. She also serves as the Associate Director for Outcomes Research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Bhatia and joined UAB in 2015 to establish the Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship. She is a world renowned physician and expert in cancer survivorship expert with numerous awards and over 250 peer reviewed publications.

Lauren Roberts, JD

Lauren Roberts is the Executive Director for Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate at Louisiana State University. Lauren brings over 15 years of experience in a variety of non-profit settings and is passionate about supporting and empowering women. Lauren specializes in operation oversight, strategic planning, and resource management to help prompt the support network for breast cancer survivors and co-survivors.

 

Christina M. Wilson PhD, RN, WHNP-BC

Christina is a board certified women’s health nurse practitioner & nurse scientist. She received her Masters as a Nurse Practitioner and her PhD in Biobehavioral Nursing Science from Virginia Commonwealth University, & completed a fellowship in cancer symptom management research at the University of Utah. She is an Assistant Professor at the UAB School of Nursing, focusing on assessment & treatment of body image & sexual health issues in gynecologic cancer. She is also an Assistant Professor & nurse practitioner in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at UAB’s O’Neal Cancer Center where she runs the Sexual Health & Cancer Clinic treating patients with sexual health issues related to breast and/or gynecologic cancer.

 

Where and when will the workshop(s) take place?

The next workshop is scheduled for February 23-24, 2024 from 8am-5pm each day. It will be held at the Smooth Rock Conference Center, 1940 Stonegate Dr, Vestavia Hills, AL 35242.

What should I expect from the primary care track?

The one-hour POTA bite-size videos for the interprofessional healthcare track will be available on-line for you to complete at your own pace to earn 1 CME/CE credit hour. Although it is not required for interprofessional healthcare track attendees to participate in the mental health track live workshops, you are eligible to sign-up for the mental health track and earn up to an additional 16 CME/CE credit hours to enhance your clinical competency in psychosocial oncology.  

What should I expect from the mental health care track?

We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you register and complete the interprofessional healthcare track one hour bite-size videos to build the fundamental knowledge of breast cancer care. You will earn 1 CME/CE credit hour for the bite-size videos before you attend the live workshops. The workshops will be offered over the course of a year in four-hour sessions. The combined workshops will offer a total of 16 CME/CE credit hours.

How do I access the POTA training?

    What is the cost for POTA training?

    Currently, there is no fee for the POTA training.

    How do I access the POTA post-workshop conference calls?

    The POTA post-workshop conference calls will be held every other month starting in March on the 2nd Tuesday at 1pm. Information about how to access the conference calls will be sent to the email address on file. 

    What do I do if I have a complaint regarding this program?
